Guild Wars 2 - Mad King Thorn

Tyria Times – Prep Time

You as regular reader have probably noticed that there wasn’t a fanfic last friday. I’m sorry. I was on a quest to find the sun. (I found it) But don’t worry, this friday another part in young Miira’s adventures will be up. I’m still planning a special Halloween story for the week after that.

I didn’t have much time to prepare for the Heart of Thorns launch friday, nor the return of the Mad King. And since the launch coincides with the return of Halloween, I’ll know what I’ll be doing friday evening. Yes, running the labyrinth. And I’ll probably be doing that for the next two weeks.

I have a level 45 thief that needs to get to level 80. He’ll get there easily with all the boosts from celebration boosters, XP boosters, food and utility buffs. Last year I leveled Miira from 54 to 80 in just a few evenings and I managed to hoard enough Halloween items for The Crossing.

ArenaNet is bringing the old dungeon back with some improvements and there will be new skins and items to farm. Yes, I’m excited. From all the seasonal events Guild Wars 2 has, I like this one best. I’m looking forward to the new achievements and even to completing the jumping puzzle again. The first year it took me about six whole days before I could make it. Last year it took me about three days. I hope I’ll get it even quicker this year.

I have completed one thing of my to do list before Heart of Thorns. I’ve completed The Crossing! I was too lazy to farm for lodestones, so I bought them. I’m poor again, but it’s worth it. My norn necro will proudly wield it until I finish Nevermore.

For this Halloween I hope I’ll find some more recipes for the other craftable Halloween skins. I like them very much and want all of them. Yes, I’ll work my butt off again to craft them. Yes, even if that means it’ll take longer to complete a legendary.

Tyria Times – Second Beta Weekend and Update

Last weekend was the second beta weekend for Heart of Thorns. We were able to test the specializations for more classes. They announced the thief specialization, daredevil, last week and it got me excited. A melee staff already sounded nice (I like it on revenant as well), but the skills are great. I created a second beta character, a thief, to try it out. It’s as awesome as I expect it to be. I don’t usually like melee, because in group events it’s easier to play ranged. The daredevil has an extra endurance bar so you’ll be able to dodge more often and you definitely need it. I think it’ll get easier with the right built and equipment. That requires some tinkering and I suspect that they’ll still balance some things. Definitely one to try out in PvP.

This beta event revealed a new part of Verdant Brink. It’s the first map you’ll encounter in the heart of the Maguuma. During the first beta weekend, we only had access to the middle biome, while this weekend, we got to see the canopies as well. I finally got to try out some gliding and dropping down from the highest trees.

I played some Stronghold PvP matches. It’s the new PvP mode where you have to summon mercenaries with supplies to break through the enemy’s gate and kill their lord. It’s more strategic, which I like, but playing with people who don’t know the mode can be a pain in the butt. I don’t play PvP to win though, I always play for fun. So losing is a bummer, but not the end of the world for me. I know leagues are coming, but I won’t bother to rank. I know I’m not a good player so my rank won’t be very high anyways.

Tyria Times – To-Do List Before Heart of Thorns

Even before the announcement of Heart of Thorns, I’d written a list of all the things that I want to do in Guild Wars 2 this year. The coming of the expansion has only made me more excited and pushed the deadline forward. I don’t want to complete all of this, this year, but before the expansion hits. Since I’ve no idea when it’ll come, I’ll have to hurry up :)

The PlayList – Resolutions

It’s the end of January and I haven’t been posting much. I recovered from a busy holiday season and then I was in a car accident, with a bike, two weeks ago. But as you might have seen, two types of posts have been posted consistently since 2015 started: character creation videos and screenshots on Saturdays. I wanted to add some visual spice to my blog and this is just the beginning. I have more plans and one of them is to post on a more regular basis.

The character creation videos are a for personal research. Character customization and development has always interested me for a long time. I recorded about two dozen videos already and they’ll be uploaded to my YouTube account and shared here later. I will use these videos later for a more extensive article/essay on character creation in (MMO)RPGs.

I have also written down a small to-do list of things I want achieve in Guild Wars 2 (post is up now). With the expansion, Heart of Thorns, coming later this year, it’s an excellent time to complete some things of old and start getting ready for the new content. Are you excited? I am.

Besides that I still want to complete some games from my backlog. I want to complete all the DLC of Dragon Age: Origins, one or two visual novels (Fading Hearts and Always Remember Me) and a few indie games from bundles. One game I want to finish is Faerie Solitaire. I’m about a quarter in and I’ll keep playing it in between things. Another one is Evoland. I’m stuck halfway through the game and I think when I’m pasted that point, I’ll be able to finish it.

I have no ambitions in League of Legends beyond just playing with friends and enjoying (mostly) friendly ARAM games.

Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns Update

Mike O’Brien confirmed that Heart of Thorns to be the first expansion pack during the panel at PAX South. He started with a recap of the manifesto in 2010. He talked about what he wanted for an MMO and what Guild Wars 2 is going to be. Guild Wars 2 was the basis for this and the expansion is another step to the right direction.

There will be no new item tier and no new level cap. Your characters will still be at the top, but there are more ways to progress. Heart of Thorns will introduce a whole lot of new features without throwing the base game away. The old areas and items are still relevant after the expansion is released.

I’m very excited for the expansion. Read on for an overview of the major features announced by Colin Johanson.

NCSoft has registered the trademark of the above logo and the name Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. There have been rumours about the expansion for quite a while and here it is. The big announcement is expected at Pax this year.

That_shaman, someone who finds a lot of stuff before others do, wasn’t the one who posted the information on Reddit, keep a clear conscious since he didn’t want to spoil the announcement.
