So I went bowling…

My aunt turned 50 and she invited us for an hour of bowling with dinner afterwards. She’s my favourite aunt, so I really didn’t want to skip on celebrating with her. But I also knew that bowling is high risk for me.

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve got hypermobility syndrome (HMS). My joints are more susceptible to dislocation or subluxation and certain movements, impact or weight will affect me in a bad way.

Holding a 3 KG bowling ball with three fingers, swinging it and then hoping my fingers won’t be stuck in it, isn’t a good way to spend my time. But I really, really wanted to take part. I haven’t done much fun activities outside of the house in a while, and this was a good opportunity to take up a different perspective.

After having dealt with chronic pain for nearly a decade, I’ve grown tired of having my pain dictate my life. In my 101 goals, I’ve actively decided to do things that I wouldn’t have done before. I could’ve added bowling, but didn’t since I didn’t see it as something I *had* to do.

Yesterday I decided I would bowl, no matter what. Well, except maybe a dislocated joint.

I was smart enough to bring my wrist brace and I wore it after my first round. Throwing those first two balls was already an attack on my wrist muscled and the brace gave me the support I needed.

My score wasn’t great, but I didn’t expect it to be. I thought I was going to be the loser, but I did fairly well and my score wasn’t that much off from my mom and sister. My score was much better than I thought it would be.

And that’s a personal victory for me. I bowled for an hour without serious injuries, just some muscle aches which will disappear in a few days. I had fun and I didn’t let my situation tell me how to live my life. It felt great and I hope this change in mindset will help me the coming years in taking back control.

Under new pain management

The past three years I’ve dealt with chronic pains from hypermobility and my doctor diagnosed that I have Tietze’s syndrome as well. I’m guessing I’ve had that for the past three years as well, but because I had so many different symptoms, they overlooked it. Add a permanent neck injury to that, an ankle bruised on three different places which might not go away and shoulders which really like to subluxate. I used pain killers, NSAIDs and analgesic gels. But none of them worked well enough. I recently started doing Tog Chöd, Tibetan sword fighting, and my teacher taught me an exercise to help me control the pain. Two days after doing it, the pain is gone.

The would-be Play List

image

Last monday I finished my daily for Guild Wars 2 and startes a new playthrough of Dragon Age:Origins. I still need to finish Awakenings, the other DLC campaigns and 2. I would’ve finished most of Origins by now if Tuesday didn’t happen.

Updated

I have updated the two pages about me. Not much is added, besides some links on the hypermobility page and the addition that I’ve graduated from university. I’m getting my diploma on Tuesday and I’m very excited :D Who wouldn’t be?

When I was updating the page about hypermobility, it felt incomplete. I’ve learned and experienced a lot in these two years and I do see people coming here to read about my experiences. For them, and for me, I’ll write some more general posts about hypermobility. Note that I’m certainly not a doctor and have never studied anything in the field of medicine or biology. These posts are all my own experiences and definitely don’t apply to everyone who is hypermobile.

Surprises

In my last post I wrote that I couldn’t game because it’s too cold. But my body keeps surprising me. Last monday I went to physical therapy and I complained that I still have a headache. My first major headache was at the end of june last year. Since then I’ve visited multiple doctors, had scans, had to give up some of my blood. The last doctor diagnosed my headache is caused by a neck injury. Monday I found out what kind of injury. Apparently one of my cervical vertebrae is dislocated. Between the C1 and the C2, the parts which connect the skull to the spine, there are 4 ligaments, and these aren’t doing their job. I don’t know which one, or if it’s multiple, but something there is wrong. I had no idea there were ligaments there and I could dislocate them also. Not all surprises are good, but it does help me to realize that I really do have to watch out for any kind of blunt trauma on any place of my body.

Now that I know what’s wrong, I can try to fix it, or have someone fix it for me. But in the mean time, I’ll be taking painkillers, yay.

No gaming

It’s been a while since I last played League of Legends. Winter time is definitely my least favorite time of the year. It’s cold and now there’s snow and it’s freezing (-6 degrees celsius). This kind if weather makes my body disagree with itself. My joints don’t wanna work together so I can’t work on the computer for a long time. If I do, I might damage my joints and might not be able to game again like I did. Right now, I’m also having problems again with a neck injury from last year. I can’t watch a flickering screen with fast-moving pictures. Now it’s not a choice anymore if I want to go game or not. I can’t, even though I want to very much. It’s good that there are things I can do without a computer. Reading books and writing are excellent. But that’s why it’s quiet here. I will come back and write more. I promise :)
