Trying Out Wolcen

Wolcen’s release was like a storm, one I wasn’t really prepared for. I heard people talking about it, sure. But I don’t pay much attention to early access games, or games in beta. So I heard people mentioning it, saying it was promising. That doesn’t always mean the end product will live up to the expectations.

I read Belghast‘s early impressions and decided to watch Rhykker’s sponsored videos, which consisted of an overview, short guide, and a build video. It was enough to convince me to try it.

Since the servers still have issues, I played offline. I usually play aRPGs solo, so I don’t mind much. That said, my husband and I bought copies with the intention to play together. And we will, as soon as things are fixed. For now, I’m just hobbling along in single player. I’m trying out different things, skills from Rhykker’s build (I love the turret, ok? Heimerdinger is one of my favourite champions).

I’m level 13 now with ranged/magic character. She’s using a pistol and a catalyst which allows her to pew pew really fast while still using spell to blast enemies away. Using a willpower skill will also speed up the process of gaining rage, the main resource for ranged characters. This also allows me to always have a damage skill available to me.

I was honestly pleasantly surprised that you can create your own class/build regardless of what you pick at the beginning of the game. Your character’s progression doesn’t even depend on which weapons you use, like in Dungeon Siege II. You can pick your weapons, pick skills associated with the weapons you have, and change your passives if you want (and have enough currency to do so).

So even if you have max leveled your character, you can still switch builds if you want. The only thing you might have to do is train your new skills.

Saying Wolcen is a love child between Diablo and Path of Exile is pretty accurate. Especially when you look at the passive skill tree, the gate of fates. It’s filled with nodes interconnecting with each other within a ‘class’ and another ‘class’, but you’re free to branch out. One thing Wolcen does differently is that each ring (three layers in total) can rotate, even after you’ve picked skills. So you can change up your build whenever you want with your available skill points.

I’ve only played a few hours but I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s filling the hole after I’d completed the Diablo 3 season 19 and Path of Exile (nor Torchlight 3 Alpha) couldn’t fill it. The combat is much more dynamic than Diablo since you have to dodge skills. You also get a fair chance to do so with the telegraphs on the ground. It reminds me more of Guild Wars 2’s combat which I also really like. Rhykker said the Act 1 boss is pretty hard to beat if you don’t pay attention. I’m not the best player, but I do have experience with tough, multi phase bosses, so who knows. I’ll report back when I’ve passed that point.

Overwhelmed

Let me just start off with a nice list. You’ll probably know where I’m going when you read it.

  • Guild Wars 2 Episode 1 of the Icebrood Saga came out
  • Diablo 3 Season 19 started
  • Stardew Valley 1.4 update came out
  • Pokemon Sword was released
  • The Sims Discover University came out

THERE’S SO MUCH THINGS I WANT TO DO!

Honestly, this is just the list of immediate things. I still have more I want to do, like finishing Dragon Age: Inquisition. But I’m not even counting those. My writing goals aren’t on this list either. Or all the Japan-related blog posts I want to write.

I’m overwhelmed. I’ve only been away for 12, 13 days, but so much has happened that I have a hard time catching up. I’m sorry if I haven’t read your posts, liked, or commented.

My husband says I have to prioritize, which is great advice. That puts Guild Wars 2 near the bottom of the list. I’ve unlocked the episode so I can play it whenever. The Diablo 3 season runs for another two months at least, so I don’t have to focus on that either. I really want to play the Stardew Valley update on the Switch, and that one hasn’t been released yet, which makes it less relevant. The Sims is a game I usually play when I’m not feeling too good, which isn’t now.

That leaves Pokemon Sword. Looking at it from this perspective has helped me to get rid of the overwhelmed feeling. I know what I want to do now (catch more wooloos, hope for a shiny).

I’m going to do another round of prioritizing with all of the things I want to do this month. I can already say that an amazing new project will be on my Instagram until Christmas day. Please check it out! The first post will be up soon.

Diablo 3: Quest For The Galactic Wings

You might know that Diablo 3 has Seasons every few months. You start out with a new character with no unlocks except cosmetics. I’ve played them since the beginning and only finished the official chapters a handful of times.

After finishing four chapters, you’ll have a full class set and a few cosmetic items. Beyond those four, you can choose to participate in even more difficult challenges to gain new stash tabs, other cosmetics, and starting this season, a beautiful set of galactic wings.

Yes, it’s all cosmetics. I don’t care if it’s only cosmetics, I still want it. This is the first time I’ll try to finish the other chapters as well. So far, I’ve managed to do Slayer, but no more. Not completely. It’s hard and I’m by no means a good player. Some of the challenges are pure grind and that’s okay. At least I know that I can finish those if I put enough time into it. Extracting 40 legendaries is a lot of work. Who knew.

I’m still struggling with my set dungeon mastery. I play a monk this season and have the wukong set. The guide I used said it was one of the easiest set dungeons to master. I still failed after twenty attempts. Maybe I’m just not ready. Or I don’t have the right gear. I don’t know, but I’m doing something wrong.

If you have any tips, guides or videos to help me overcome my incompetence, do link me. I’ll do just about anything to get those wings :D

101 Goals, 1001 Days: 2 Puzzlers and a Season

One of my goals was to complete a season in Diablo 3 and I already completed that goal, but this time I completely crushed it. Thanks to my friend Welshtroll who was kind enough to let me run along with him. I finished season 16 yesterday, only a month after it started and with only a few play sessions.

I had just reached level 70 and paragon level 12 when I joined Welshtroll’s game for two or three rift runs. They’re the easiest way to level and maybe find some loot. I gained about fifty paragon level, enough to help me with the last quests. The four chapters are done and I have my butterfly wings. I even managed to do some content that I’d never done before.

Wayward Manor

Wayward Manor, a game by Neil Gaiman, is a game I kickstarted a long time ago, but never played. I’m glad I did. It’s such a cute game. The story is a creepy one, but the art and animation make it more of a comedy horror than creepy horror.

You’re a ghost and it’s your job to haunt the house and open the chest. Scare the family members by using objects in the room. Spike drinks, ruin dresses, haunt armor, and explode barrels by setting them on fire.

Each level has a specific order of things to succeed a scare. Some scares will net you an achievement, but that’s all there is. As far as I know they don’t do anything but look pretty. I didn’t go for 100% so I don’t know what getting all of the achievements will do.

Midnight Mysteries: The Salem Witch Trials

Sometimes you need a break and do something entirely different. Midnight Mysteries is my kind of different. I usually play RPGs, simulation or action games, so doing a point and click puzzle game that’s heavy on atmosphere, history and logic is a real change.

I enjoyed point and click puzzle games when I was a kid although the classics might have been too hard for a kid to finish. The Secrets of Monkey Island was a game I could never beat and I felt motion sick while playing Myst. The movement between the scenes was too much for my brain to handle. I’d like to think I almost finished it, but I’ll never know.

The copy of Monkey Island is still gathering dust in my Steam Library, but now my friend Michael is doing a let’s play of the third game and I’d rather watch that than play myself.

Midnight Mysteries is a mix of point and click puzzles and hidden object gameplay, all of it tied together in a story that mixes history and fiction. I finished it last week while my head was all over the place. But doing those little puzzles and asking me to focus my attention on one task helped me to organize my head a little.

While I didn’t plan to finish this one, I was happy to have finished it. It’s one game less in my backlog. I also quickly played two other games that I crossed off my list. I didn’t play them for long, but know that I won’t play more of them.

I also finished the first of the books recommended by you guys. The review for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society will appear on Narratess very soon.

One Class I Won’t Play

Is probably a tank. It just doesn’t fit my playstyle well. I prefer to play DPS with a healing ability since I play solo a lot. I could go tanky, but that often means that I have a low damage output and just messes up with my gaming vibe. I want the enemy’s HP bar to disappear in seconds.

Oceanmariee of Soul of the Forest blogged about this and it’s an interesting prompt, so I wanted to talk about what classes (or roles) I do play and why I won’t pick tank or melee classes as often.

Arclight Varus

I used to have a laggy internet connection and was deathly afraid to play anything melee. Especially in League of Legends. I knew that I couldn’t jump into a fight, because that often meant that I was dead before my screen readjusted to real time. It sucked.

Now my internet connection is great and I rarely have lag anymore. I tried melee in multiple games now and I’m still on the fence if I like playing melee at all. It worked for my monk in Diablo 3, but I didn’t like the martial artist class in Blade & Soul. It might because of the game and the combat mechanics, I haven’t thought about that well enough.

Diablo III - The Treasure Realm
Greed: The Baroness of the Treasure Realm. This is bonus level which you can find in a portal left by a treasure goblin.

Even in Guild Wars 2 where each class can wield a multitude of weapons, often both melee and range, I tend to go for range. The bigger, the better. My main, a ranger, does have melee weapons in her bags so I can switch to sword or great sword when I know these will work better against the enemies I’m facing.

Guild Wars 2 Strider's Armor
Naella is wearing the Strider’s Armor, Rox’s Bow and Quiver.

I’m always looking for the most interesting class to play in a new game, where ‘most interesting’ is a class that isn’t be done by everyone else. Warriors, rangers, mages are old. Give me something interesting, something new. Think of a new way to crush demons. Maybe mind control them and have them eat their own brothers and sisters. It’s a nice twist on the classic necromancer. I’d play that.

Diablo 3 Seasons

This post is part of the Blaugust Developer Appreciation Week.

I think I’m not the only who was happy to see seasons arrive to Diablo 3. Diablo 2 used to have ladders for set periods of time, but with only the glory of being the best, there was no incentive. The seasons in Diablo 3 do.

Each season has a complete set for every class and two cosmetic items. You can only get one set per season. I think this is a great way to have players come back. The cosmetic items so far have been different every season. The sets are on rotation so you have the chance to get the other sets in other seasons.

You get the rewards after completing the four chapters. Normally this is won’t take up too much time especially when you play with multiple people. I play solo, so it’s taking me longer. Leveling to level 70 does go faster than before because I’m learning when to level where.

One of my 101 goals was to complete a season. I never take the time to complete the fourth chapter. So taking on this goal would force me to do it at least once. I then realized that doing those last few achievements wasn’t that hard. Since then I’ve completed a few more seasons.

101 Goals, 1001 Days: Just a small update

No post dedicated to one thing, but to many.

I’m still blogging and writing in my journal every day.

I’ve almost finished Season 11 of Diablo 3. There’s more than enough time and I’ve hit level 70. I’m working on my paragon levels now so I can challenge the higher torment levels necessary to complete the last few achievements.

I’ve been playing a little more Renowned Explorers and Anno 1404. It’s not on my list since I own it on GOG, but both are fun. Even when I lose. Renowned Explorers is still kicking my butt in encounters. I know my strategic skills are on the bad side, but some encounters are just too hard for the level I’m on. I don’t have the skills or the equipment to finish them. I guess I’ll have to pick a better team.

After some more research I noticed that Totto-chan is actually an autobiography, so picking Elon Musk was the right choice. It arrived today together with The Book Thief and Creative Confidence. Both will be going on my list of to read for the next 2,5 years.

I made a creamy chicken spinach sauce to go with pasta from scratch. Another recipe I borrowed from Pinterest. I’ll take a photo from the leftovers in the next couple of days and share the recipe with you.

New Plans

Diablo_III_ss14

It’s been a while since I played Diablo 3, mainly because I had so much lag that I died instantly in Nightmare Act 4. I couldn’t see anything, I couldn’t do anything, except respawn. My connection is a bit more stable and the patch 1.07 is here, so I decided to go back. I remember that 1.07 was my favorite patch in Diablo 2, when the Nagel Ring still dropped with awesome stats. From I’ve seen so far, I really like this patch as well.

Diablo 3 – Witch Doctor Summoner Build

You know those moments when you think of something genius. Most of such moments happen in the shower, on the toilet or just walking. Diablo 3 is now ever-present in the back of my mind, especially during those moments. Yesterday morning I thought of a Witch Doctor Summoner build.

Busy times

As you’ve noticed I haven’t posted anything for a while. Real life is what happened. My internet connection prevented me from playing Diablo 3 like a mad man. I mean, playing a hardcore barbarian with 450+ ping is a bit too hardcore for me.

That’s why I finished another play through of Dragon Age: Origins. This time the complete edition, so with all the DLC. But I’ve only finished the original campaign and the DLC quests there. I did manage to marry Alistair though (the main reason for playing again). I will (try to) finish the other campaigns and Awakenings soon.

Between my conquest of Ferelden, I celebrated my birthday, read a lot of books, went on a short vacation, rearranged my room and painted the walls. So I’ve been busy :)
